Our London office is the hub of Chadbourne’s emerging and developing markets practice. London-based lawyers advise both domestic and international clients within the London market and on cross-border transactions all over the world. Our diverse language skills, cultural understanding, industry-specific knowledge and client services complement those of our colleagues throughout Chadbourne’s international network of offices. Together we offer commercially focused advice, using English, US or local law, as appropriate.

Chadbourne lawyers are highly regarded for their market awareness. In London, our particular sector interests include banking and finance, insurance and reinsurance, construction, energy, oil and gas, mining and food and beverage. We support clients in achieving their goals by advising on corporate transactions, debt and equity capital markets, banking and finance, bankruptcy and financial restructuring, tax issues, project finance, litigation and international arbitration.

Our niche is cross-border transactions involving emerging and developing markets, in particular, Eastern Europe, Turkey, the Middle East, North Africa, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. Our London office hosts an Africa Desk, Brazil Desk and Russia Desk, advising clients on cross-border investments, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and corporate governance in their respective languages. Native French-speaking lawyers in our project finance team focus on helping clients with interests in francophone Africa.

Many of our lawyers in London are proficient in several languages and are confident in negotiating and documenting matters in French, Russian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish and German – as well as English, of course.

Insurance and Reinsurance

Chadbourne's insurance and reinsurance lawyers have a strong track record in handling high value and high profile insurance and reinsurance litigation and arbitration proceedings.

Few firms have the top talent and full range of capabilities on both sides of the Atlantic that Chadbourne’s internationally recognized insurance/reinsurance practice offers. Our London-based team has experience of handling international claims, both in a direct and reinsurance context, and our ability to team with insurance and reinsurance specialists in our US and other international offices makes us one of the few insurance and reinsurance practices in the London Market with genuine international credentials.

With an enviable track record of handling financial lines matters, we advise on high value claims and complex disputes, including Bermuda Form arbitrations dealing with professional service and product liability claims, property, industrial machinery breakdown and business interruption claims, liability claims arising from significant industrial accidents (e.g., Buncefield) and asbestos related liability claims (EL).

Bankruptcy and Restructuring

Our bankruptcy and restructuring team acts for large institutional investors, officeholders and other stakeholders in the distressed asset class and is recognized as a leader in preserving and creating value for creditors in both out-of-court and judicial restructurings of large UK, US and international companies. Many of our engagements are cutting-edge cross-border insolvency assignments. Members of the team are experienced in dealing with restructurings and insolvency issues domestically and on a cross-border basis in Europe and, increasingly, in emerging markets.

Given our relationships within the global financial community and our use of innovative techniques in structuring and implementing transactions, we create value for parties interested in acquiring or selling financially distressed companies or assets. We regularly work in multidisciplinary teams.

Banking and Finance

We have a wealth of experience in relation to banking and structured finance transactions, related restructurings, regulation and dispute resolution. We specialise in cross-border transactions, advising investment and commercial banks, investment funds, loan servicers, trustees and corporate in matters where financing has been sourced either from the bank markets or the capital markets, working closely with our international colleagues when appropriate.

Litigation

Whether through trial, negotiated settlement, alternative dispute resolution, arbitration or mediation, we offer clients practical, effective legal strategies. We handle a wide variety of business disputes, frequently with an international element, including joint venture disputes, business torts, insurance disputes and general commercial litigation. We represent clients in disputes in both the UK and abroad, and have the resources to field large teams on an extended basis and to work around the clock when needed.

International Arbitration

Chadbourne is a leading law firm in International Arbitration with extensive experience in all aspects of arbitral practice. Our English qualified lawyers represent clients in disputes throughout Europe, Africa and Asia, as well as in North and South America. We are experienced in litigating cases under various governing bodies of law, including common and civil law traditions, and in a variety of industries including energy, construction, oil and gas, concessions (and the project finance and construction agreements related to these projects), joint ventures, intellectual property, telecommunications, chemicals, mining, pharmaceuticals, financial services, medical devices, insurance and reinsurance, and many others.
