Practice Description

Thomas Bezanson has more than three decades of experience in commercial arbitration, the defense of products liability and other civil actions, representing both U.S. and European clients.

Representative Matters

  • Represented New York State judges in obtaining summary judgement against the Governor, Legislature and State for unconstitutionally failing to adjust judicial compensation.
  • Successfully defended claims brought by individual smokers, class actions, and claims for medical reimbursement and won several pivotal and nationally-publicized jury verdicts in cases brought against a major tobacco company involving claims of personal injury alleged to have resulted from cigarette smoking.
  • Represented one of the largest manufacturers of tobacco products in connection with smoking and health litigation brought in the courts of Great Britain, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Poland and Kazakhstan, and obtained exclusively defense victories in the first smoking and health trials ever conducted in the United Kingdom, and more recently, in Kazakhstan.
  • Represented a leading cosmetics company in obtaining dismissal of a products liability action in New York State Court and continues to represent Avon in a number of matters.

Honors

Mr. Bezanson was awarded the title Empire State Counsel for pro bono representation and in 2007 was awarded the first New York Lawyers for the Public Interest Pro Bono Leadership Award. He is listed in The Legal 500 US (2007-2008) for litigation, Marquis Who’s Who in America (1994-2007), Marquis Who’s Who in Finance and Industry (2000-2007), was cited in New York Super Lawyers (2006 and 2007), has been listed in Law Business Research Limited’s The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers and The International Who’s Who of Product Liability Defense Lawyers (1997-2006), Marquis Who’s Who in American Law (1994-2006), and was “highly recommended” for dispute resolution in Global Counsel 3000 (2001-2004). Mr. Bezanson was also selected "Lawyer of the Week" by The Times of London.

Activities and Affiliations

Mr. Bezanson is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York State and American Bar Associations, the Emeritus Board of the New York Lawyers for the Public Interest and the Program Committee and Board of Trustees of the Federal Bar Council. 

He serves on the New York State Commission on the Jury and the New York State Bar Association Special Committee on Age Discrimination in the Profession. In the past, he also served on the Duke University Law School Board of Visitors, the Board of the Legal Aid Society and the Board of Directors of the Westchester Philharmonic, as well as the boards of a number of additional charitable organizations.
