Practice Description
Michelle George has extensive experience handling complex insurance and reinsurance disputes, often with an international element, as well as a wide range of professional indemnity and product liability claims. Ms. George regularly represents clients on jurisdiction issues as well as reinsurance disputes relating to asbestos, pollution and health hazard (APH) losses emanating from the US. She has been involved with a wide range of international arbitrations, subject to UNCITRAL, ICC and LCIA rules. She regularly advises clients on legal issues arising from record inspections and policy buy-backs/commutations.
Representative Matters
- Representing a major Swiss reinsurance company in relation to a Bermuda arbitration involving a $100m claim by the captive insurer of a major U.S. pharmaceutical manufacturer.
- Representing a leading U.S. insurance company with respect to Bermuda arbitrations involving two major accounting firms relating to audit malpractice and tax shelter claim litigation in the U.S.
- Representing a leading London run-off company with respect to various High Court and arbitration proceedings involving aggregation issues arising from APH reinsurance claims arising from the U.S. and the UK (most recent reported decision-Anglo American Insurance Company v Lloyd's Syndicates (2007)).
- Representing a major U.S. insurance group in relation to multiple insurance and reinsurance proceedings in the UK and the U.S. involving in excess of $300m of claims relating to film finance insurance.
- Representing a major Japanese telecoms company in relation to ICC arbitration proceedings in Paris arising from a satellite defect claim.
Activities and Affiliations
Ms. George is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for Sweet & Maxwell’s monthly Insurance and Reinsurance Law Briefing; British Insurance Law Association (BILA); Reinsurance Working Group of the Association Internationale de Droit des Assurances (AIDA); and the AIDA Reinsurance and Insurance Arbitration Society (ARIAS U.S.). She is also a member of the London Solicitors Litigation Association, Law Society's Civil Litigation Section and City of London Law Society. Ms. George is recommended for Litigation-insurance and reinsurance in Legal Experts 2010.
