Ignacio Suarez Anzorena focuses his practice in international arbitration and investor-state disputes resulting from the application of bilateral investment treaties. Mr. Suarez Anzorena has acted and given advice with regard to disputes before the most relevant arbitral institutions including the ICC, AAA, LCIA, and particularly ICSID. He has been involved in disputes related to Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, Honduras, El Salvador, Panama, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Hungary, Poland, Iran, Egypt and Spain. He has published over 15 papers on international arbitration and has delivered over 60 presentations and conferences on the subject.

  • Advising a sovereign government of Central America in dispute related to an infrastructure contract before an ICSID tribunal. 
  • Advising an oil company in two different investment treaty disputes with two Latin American countries. 
  • Acting for a Dutch oil company in a case under the Energy Charter Treaty against Kazakhstan before an ICSID tribunal. 
  • Advising an oil company in relation to an investment treaty dispute with an African country before an ICSID tribunal. 
  • Advising an oil/gas company in relation to a contractual dispute related to a Joint Operating Agreement in a Latin American country (LCIA rules). 
  • Representing a major European utility company in an ICC case against a state owned company from a Central American country. 
  • Advising a German company and a Peruvian company with regard to a potential investment treaty case against a South American government arising from a nationalization process.
  • Advising a US utility company with regard to potential ICSID arbitration under the Energy Charter Treaty against an Asian country. 
  • Advising an Eastern European government in a case under the Energy Charter Treaty pursuant to the rules of the Stockholm Arbitration Institute. 
  • Advising in a dispute among shareholders of a holding company before an ICC arbitral tribunal and coordinating related litigation strategy in a Central American country. 
  • Advising clients on issues of corporate planning for purposes of benefiting from bilateral investment treaties with regard to projects in China, Botswana, Guatemala, Peru and Ecuador.
  • Acting for the Argentine Republic in more than 10 investment treaty disputes before ICSID arbitral tribunals. 
  • Successfully representing a state company in $150 million dispute concerning the construction of an atomic plant before an ICC arbitral tribunal. 

Honors

Mr. Suarez Anzorena has been ranked by Chambers, Latin American edition 2009-2011 for Latin America-wide International Arbitration, with the publication noting that he "has bolstered the firm's practice across the region and brings substantial expertise in investor-state arbitration to the firm." The International Who’s Who of Commercial Arbitration (Global Arbitration Review - 2008-2010) said “Ignacio Suarez Anzorena features prominently in Washington, DC and his Latin American experience was brought to our attention.” He was profiled by Legal 500 and Who's Who in Public International Law (2007). Mr. Suarez Anzorena is also listed in Legal Business Arbitration Report (2007): Described as one of the “bright young things” and as having “outstanding knowledge about arbitration and the Latin American market”.
