Solar Power in Emerging Markets: A Tutorial

December 7, 2011

Please join us in San Francisco for a tutorial on the financing and development of solar energy projects in international emerging markets. This afternoon program will focus on:

  • Overview of unique financing sources (development financing institutions, export credit, local currency financing, and others) that are available for projects in emerging markets; explanations of individual eligibility rules and program requirements for these financing sources; highlights of policy issues that frequently appear in emerging market loan documentation.
  • Introduction to political risk insurance products, including an explanation of risks that can and cannot be insured against; factors to consider in deciding whether or not to procure political risk insurance for a solar project investment; and eligibility rules for certain political risk insurance providers.
  • Concessions, Implementation Agreements and Host Government Agreements: how these differ from documentation commonly seen in domestic U.S. transactions.
  • Dispute resolution and choice of law.
  • Key questions to ask in evaluating emerging market opportunities.
  • Selected opportunities and incentives for solar energy development in individual emerging market countries.
