Public Sector Infrastructure Investment: Katowice and the Metropolitan Area of Upper Silesia
March 20, 2009
Katowice is the capital of the Upper Silesian agglomeration, Poland’s largest metropolitan area. A top level delegation from Katowice, led by the mayor, Piotr Uszok, with the president of the Special Economic Zone, visits London to meet potential investors. This is a chance to learn at first hand about the city’s biggest project opportunities.
The city of Katowice has been consistently fulfilling its investment objectives. Last year, the city continued modernising its road and sewage systems, housing and leisure centres. Ongoing investment plans total over €1.3 billion, of which €106m is to be spent this year - double last year’s budget. Two major events venues are to be built, the International Congress Centre and the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and a third one, the famous Spodek arena, is being refurbished. A tender is to be announced concerning the €30 first phase transformation of Katowice’s city centre - a project that will draw in up to €300m of private sector investment. The city and Polish railways PKP will build a fast regional railway and renovate the station.
“The city realised all its investment plans for 2008, and this year will bring more challenges,” says mayor Piotr Uszok.
