Practice Description
Christopher Cardona focuses on the resolution of high-value insurance and reinsurance disputes, particularly at the international level. He works extensively for the London and international markets on complex disputes, many of which originate from claims under bankers', directors’ and officers’ (D&O), professional indemnity, property and public liability policies. Mr. Cardona has significant experience in the Latin American insurance and reinsurance business. He acts for many of the London market companies and syndicates writing business in the area.
Representative Matters
- US$40 million claim under Professional Indemnity policy. Acting for London Reinsurers in Madoff-related claims by Peruvian financial institution.
- US$25 million claim under Bankers Blanket Bond, Colombia. Acting for London reinsurers in connection with a claim by a fiduciary investment company in Colombia.
- US$500 million Material Damage and Business Interruption Reinsurance Claim. Acting for the insured in connection with a material damage and business interruption claim following a breakdown at a Peruvian mine operated by the insured.
- US$12 million claim under Bankers Blanket Bond, Panama. Acting for London Reinsurers in connection with a claim under a Bankers Blanket Bond following a mortgage fraud at a leading Panamanian Bank.
- US$10 million D&O claims, Spain. Acting for London and overseas Reinsurers in connection with multiple D&O claims emanating from a Bank of Spain investigation following the discovery of irregularities at a leading Spanish Bank.
- US$25 million Business Interruption Reinsurance Claim, Venezuela. Acting for London Reinsurers in connection with a Venezuelan business interruption claim valued at US$25 million. Representing London Reinsurers in English proceedings against the Venezuelan Cedant. Reinsurance issues include follow the settlements and breach of claims cooperation clauses. Reported as Lexington Insurance Co. v. Multinacional de Seguros SA [2008] EWHC 1170.
- US$5 million claim against brokers. Acting for a Panamanian Insurance Company following a fraud at a London market insurance broker.

Mr. Cardona is listed in Chambers UK: A Client Guide to the UK Legal Profession (2008, 2010 and 2011) as an insurance and reinsurance specialist. He is also noted in The Legal 500 UK (2010) for insurance and reinsurance litigation and is listed in Legal Experts 2008. In addition, Mr. Cardona is recognized by Best Lawyers (2010) for his work in insurance in the UK and the U.S.
Activities and Affiliations
Mr. Cardona is a member of the British Insurance Law Association. He also regularly lectures on insurance and reinsurance topics and advises the insurance market on policy issues, product development and policy wordings.
