2015 Summer Program - Orientation Day
LIFE AT CHADBOURNE
Our summer programs remain a source of great pride for the firm and serve as the platform for developing our talented and well-rounded lawyers. We offer first-rate training through our formal professional development program, hands-on experience in many of our diverse practice areas and significant guidance from senior lawyers that will provide you the proper foundation to develop and build confidence in your legal skills.
"It was clear even from my first interview that the lawyers at Chadbourne are invested in my development both as a teammate and as a person. Starting as a summer associate, you are able to work on high-profile cases and innovative transactions across the globe. The combination of these opportunities and exemplary colleagues makes Chadbourne and exceptional place to work. "
"Chadbourne has given me the unique opportunity to work at a top tier firm with people who are supportive, encouraging and invested in my success at the firm; I knew from the moment I interviewed here that I wanted to work alongside Chadbourne lawyers."
"A great thing about our firm is that it's just the right size. I don't have to choose between exciting, complex cases and a collegial environment where I can develop skills from the moment I join the team. Chadbourne offers both."
“Chadbourne has a wealth of resources that it makes available to its first year associates. In addition to having Corporate Boot Camp—during which various lawyers focused on a particular aspect of corporate practice—useful trainings continue throughout the first year and beyond. Additionally, lawyers’ doors are always open and people are happy to point you in the right direction if you have questions about an assignment or aspect of the law. Questions are encouraged, and it is wonderful to work in a place that is so dedicated to the calibration of its juniors to practice of law.
“Like any top law firm, Chadbourne requires an intense commitment of time and effort from its associates. My experience at the firm has been extremely rewarding. I love my fellow associates; they have become some of my best friends. I work with partners who are genuinely invested in my development as a lawyer. Chadbourne supports and encourages my pro bono work on projects I consider to be important. And Chadbourne is a thought leader and major contributor to the green energy movement; I am proud to be a lawyer at a firm that positively impacts the world.”

How do I schedule my callback interview?
Once you have been invited to return to the office for further interviews, please contact the firmwide Recruiting Department at + 1 (212) 408-5338 to schedule your callback. Please make sure to have your availability and the name of your on-campus interviewer before you call.
What does the callback interview entail? How long should I expect my interview to last?
Callback interviews are scheduled in the morning, starting at 9:45 a.m. or 10:15 a.m. and in the afternoon, starting at 2:15 p.m. or 2:45 p.m. You will meet with three or four lawyers for approximately 30 minutes each. Our goal is to have you meet with at least one member of the Recruiting Committee on your callback interview. You will also speak with a member of the Legal Recruiting Department prior to your interview. You should expect to be in the office for approximately two hours in total. When you schedule your interview, you will be asked what practice areas are of particular interest to you; please let us know how we can help you learn more about Chadbourne. We will do our best to have you meet with lawyers in these groups.

When will the firm be able to give me information regarding the status of my candidacy?
Chadbourne strives to get back to students in as timely a manner as possible. We recognize that within the NALP 28-day timeline, students need to hear back from firms in order to make informed decisions. You should expect to be updated regarding the status of your candidacy approximately two weeks after your interview. We ask that you keep the Recruiting Department informed of any changes in your status or deadlines that you have.
May I come back to the firm for a "second look" if I receive an offer?
Yes. We welcome the opportunity to be persuasive in your decision making. If you are interested in coming back to the firm you should contact our Director of Legal Personnel & Associate Recruiting, Lisa Featherson. We are happy to tailor a second visit to your requests.
What is the typical size of your summer program?
The New York summer class typically ranges between 15-20 summer associates. The Washington, DC and Los Angeles summer classes range between two to four summer associates.
Are summer associates allowed to split their summers with other offices or employers?
Chadbourne does offer split summer opportunities on a case-by-case basis. You must receive approval from the firm before you accept your offer. If you are holding an offer and would like to discuss this option, please call our Director of Legal Personnel & Associate Recruiting, Lisa Featherson.
How do I receive assignments throughout the summer?
Work assignments are distributed by the Legal Recruiting Department and are customized based on interest, work load, familiarity with the subject and availability. There is no formal rotation throughout your summer, so you are welcome to take assignments from as many practice groups as you like. You will also fill out weekly questionnaires regarding your work to ensure that you are receiving the assignments of most interest to you.
What training opportunities are given to Summer Associates throughout the Program?
Chadbourne is dedicated to the professional development of its lawyers, which we believe begins during your first summer with the firm. Chadbourne offers a variety of training seminars and workshops throughout the summer, including but not limited to: Diversity Training, Confidentiality Training, Legal Writing Workshop, Ethics Seminar, Negotiation Training, Business Development Workshop and Deposition Skills Workshop. You will also receive presentations from each of our major practice groups to better inform you of our practice.
How will I receive feedback on my work?
The lawyers with whom you work will give you feedback on your work on a consistent basis. You will have two formal reviews throughout the summer where you will be given verbal and written feedback on all of your completed and in-progress projects.
When will I find out if I have received an offer? Will the offer be in a specific practice area?
In the past several years, Chadbourne has been able to give final offer decisions to students before the end of the Summer Program. Our offers are either transactional or litigation based, and your formal practice area will be determined closer to your start date at the discretion of the firm.
Who should I contact with additional questions?
