Launched in April 2008, Chadbourne’s Green Initiative has changed the way the Firm works. Focused on recycling and reductions in energy and resource consumption, the Green Initiative enables personnel in domestic offices to have an impact on the environment from day one. The changes at the Firm are both large and small, from recycling bins at desks and less use of plastic water bottles to double-sided printing, use of recycled paper and Energy Star-rated equipment, and purchases of Renewable Energy Certificates to offset 60 percent of the Firm’s domestic energy use.
In June 2009, Chadbourne was ranked at the top of the ABA-EPA Law Office Climate Change Challenge in three additional categories that focus on resource and energy conservation and recycling.
The Firm was first certified in the Green Power category in April 2008 as a “Leader” in the ABA-EPA Law Office Climate Challenge, a project of the American Bar Association and the Environmental Protection Agency. Now, Chadbourne has also been given "Leader" status in the Best Paper Practices, Waste Wise and Energy Star categories. In the first two, the Firm documented a 50% reduction in paper usage; in the Energy Star category, Chadbourne's New York office documented an 11.8% decrease in power usage.
These reductions were achieved by, among other practices, using more energy-efficient light bulbs and encouraging employees to shut off lights, computers and all equipment when they are not in their offices. Additionally, copiers and printers have been programmed for two-sided usage and employees have been encouraged to do more work electronically without printing.
The Climate Challenge Program encourages law firms to take specific actions to conserve energy and resources, as well as reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. Chadbourne's "Leader" status in Best Paper Practices, Waste Wise and Energy Star ranked it well ahead of most of the 168 law firms enrolled in the program to date.
The Green Initiative reflects Chadbourne’s engagement with environmental issues from both professional and civic vantage points. Professionally, our attorneys are on the front lines serving clients who are developing renewable energy resources, including wind, solar, and geothermal power and biofuels. In the civic sense, we are deeply aware of the realities of climate change and how those realities challenge us all to rethink and change our behaviors. The Green Initiative is our way of taking immediate, quantifiable steps to limit our impact on the environment.
Chadbourne has completed the requirements to qualify as a leader for the ABA-EPA Law Office Climate Challenge.
Our dedication to wise climate policies matches our devotion to client service. In the months to come, Chadbourne plans to take other actions that will further reduce our carbon footprint. We will update this page as they take effect.
