Dispute Resolution in the International Oil & Gas Business Conference

October 21, 2008

Oliver Armas chaired a session on “Investments Treaties and National Laws” on October 21 at the Dispute Resolution in the International Oil & Gas Business Conference in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Panelists discussed investment treaties such as ICSID, the Energy Charter and Bilateral Investments (BIT’s). National laws implementing and sometimes contradicting those investment treaties were also discussed. The session reviewed major energy arbitrations arising from direct investor state treaties as opposed to contract based disputes. Other topics included investor protection, expropriation, fair and equitable treatment, no less favorable treatment and compensation. Chadbourne was a sponsor of the conference, which was organized by the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) of the American Arbitration Association (AAA) and the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators.
